DescriptionLocation Engage in a Powerful Dialogue on the History and Repairing of Restrictive Racial Property Covenants in the Twin Cities (pending 2hrs CE credits) During much of the 20th century, restrictive racial covenants legally barred people of color from owning or occupying property in many Twin Cities neighborhoods, reinforcing patterns of segregation and inequality. These covenants created and sustained patterns of segregation that continue to impact the region today through deep racial disparities in housing access, generational wealth, and neighborhood opportunity. Join us Thursday, October 2, from 4-6pm at the University of St. Thomas St. Paul campus for an evening of education, reflection, and dialogue about the history and repair of racial property covenants in Minnesota. The event will include selected clips from the PBS documentary Jim Crow of the North and its companion short film, A Racial Border in Minneapolis, followed by a dynamic panel discussion. Together, we’ll explore how racial covenants shaped the housing landscape in Minnesota—and the efforts underway today to confront that legacy through education, reconciliation, and repair. Featured Panelists include: Dr. Yohuru Williams – Distinguished University Chair and Professor of History; Founding Director, Racial Justice Initiative, University of St. Thomas Kirsten Delegard – Director, Mapping Prejudice Maria Cisneros – City Attorney, City of Golden Valley; Co-founder, Just Deeds Jamar Hardy – Director of Diversity and Inclusion, Edina Realty; Founding Member, Just Deeds Whether you’re a real estate professional, student, educator, or community member, this event is ideal for those committed to understanding the roots of housing injustice and working toward equity.
